Published per-session prices run about $76–$131 in the U.S., £65–£105 privately in the UK, ₹1,000–₹2,500 at a private metro clinic in India and A$150–$250 in Australia. Few price lists set an adult rate. What changes for adults is who pays: school services end, and many insurers exclude conditions from childhood.

What a session costs, by country

Published price lists rarely set a separate adult rate: a session is priced by its length, the clinician and the setting. The figures below are per-session prices for speech therapy in general, from the same sources as our country cost pages.

What changes for adults: who pays

In the U.S., school speech services under IDEA are for students; once you’ve left school, that route has ended. Private insurance becomes the main route, and ASHA notes that many insurers cover communication disorders associated with illnesses or accidents but often exclude those with a developmental or congenital cause. A lisp or an R difference that dates from childhood is developmental, so check your policy before you book.9,8

In the UK, NHS speech and language therapy for adults is free at the point of use, but services differ by area. Gloucestershire’s adult service, for example, accepts self-referrals for most difficulties; an adult service in Hounslow, West London, focuses on neurological and voice conditions and takes referrals through a GP.10,11

In Australia, a Medicare chronic-condition care plan can rebate part of a limited number of allied-health sessions a year, shared across all allied health. In India, government hospitals are the lowest-cost route, at about ₹150–₹500 a session.7,4

Lower-cost routes

  • Online sessions: published UK online sessions start from about £47.50, and Indian online sessions run about ₹800–₹1,500.
  • Blocks of sessions: many clinics discount a prepaid block; confirm what each session includes.
  • Public routes: the NHS in the UK, and government hospitals in India.
  • Fewer sessions, more practice: a clinician sets the target and checks progress; you do the repetition at home.

The last route is the one with research behind it. In a review of treatment research for residual speech errors in teens and adults, more intensive schedules tended to work better, and the repetition is the part you can do yourself between appointments.12

What daily practice costs

SpeechStep is daily practice, not therapy, and it doesn’t replace a clinician. It is free to start with an account, and SpeechStep Premium, the full session every day, is $6.99 a month or $49.99 a year. The pricing page has the details, including the free plan.

Frequently asked questions

How much is speech therapy for adults?+

In the U.S., Medicare’s 2026 national rate for a standard session (CPT 92507) is $76.15, and New Hampshire’s claims database shows a $131 commercial average. Private sessions in the UK typically cost about £65–£105, in India ₹1,000–₹2,500 at a private metro clinic, and in Australia about A$150–$250. Published price lists rarely set a separate adult rate.

Does insurance cover adult speech therapy for a lisp or R?+

Often not. ASHA notes that many insurers cover communication disorders associated with illnesses or accidents but often exclude those with a developmental or congenital cause, and a lisp or R difference that dates from childhood is developmental. Check your policy’s wording, and ask the clinic for the codes they would bill.

Is adult speech therapy free on the NHS?+

NHS speech and language therapy is free at the point of use, but adult services vary by area. Some accept self-referrals for most difficulties; others focus on neurological and voice conditions and take GP referrals. Ask your GP or local NHS trust what your area offers.

Is online speech therapy cheaper for adults?+

Sometimes. In the UK, published online sessions start from about £47.50, and in India online sessions run about ₹800–₹1,500, below typical in-person prices. Prices vary by clinician, so compare what a session includes.

How can I keep the cost down?+

Fewer sessions plus regular practice at home is the main lever you control: a clinician sets the target and checks progress, and you do the repetition between appointments. Ask about blocks of sessions, online options and, in the U.S., whether a health savings account can be used.
