Lisp Speech Therapy Cost: Free Routes, Private Fees and What Drives the Total
There's no separate price for lisp therapy. It's treated like other speech sound work, so cost depends on country and who pays. Try free routes first: US public schools under IDEA and NHS services that take parent referrals. Australia's NDIS limit for speech pathology is A$193.99/hour in most areas (2026–27). Start with one SLP assessment.
The short answer: start with free routes, then price one assessment
There is no separate price list for a lisp. A lisp is a speech sound error: the U.S. Center for Parent Information and Resources gives lisps as an example of an articulation impairment, and ASHA lists a lateral /s/ as a distortion error. So the cost questions are the same as for other speech sound therapy: who pays, what each session costs, and how many sessions are needed.7,2
The lowest-cost routes are often public. In the U.S., public schools provide evaluation and services at no cost to children aged 3 to 21 who are eligible under IDEA. In the UK, several NHS children's speech and language therapy services take referrals straight from parents.6,7,12,13
In Australia, the NDIS price limit for a speech pathologist is A$193.99 an hour in most areas (Modified Monash areas 1–5) under the NDIS Pricing Schedule 2026–27, effective 24 September 2026. The limit was the same in the 2025–26 Pricing Arrangements and Price Limits.17
What we could not source independently
- U.S. private session prices: the ranges published online come almost entirely from clinics and therapy companies that sell sessions, so we don't repeat them here.
- UK private fees: independent therapists set their own fees. See our UK cost page for typical ranges.
- India session prices: we found only clinic and blog figures, and no government source. See our India cost page.
- A typical number of sessions for a lisp: no peer-reviewed or professional-body source we reviewed gives one.
- Australian Medicare rebates: the figures we found came from clinic pages that disagree with each other. Check current amounts on MBS Online.
Free and funded routes, country by country
| Country | Route | Who can use it | What to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| United States | Public school evaluation and services under IDEA Part B | Eligible children aged 3–21 | No cost to the family. The speech impairment must adversely affect educational performance, and a team that includes the parents decides. |
| United Kingdom | NHS children's speech and language therapy | Children and young people; ages and criteria vary by trust | Many services accept parent self-referral. At least one trust generally waits until about age 7–10 to treat lisps. |
| Australia | NDIS plan funding | NDIS participants | Price limit A$193.99/hour in Modified Monash areas 1–5 (A$271.59 remote, A$290.99 very remote) in the 2026–27 Pricing Schedule, the same as 2025–26. Applies to NDIA-managed and plan-managed participants. |

United States: ask the school for an evaluation
Under IDEA, special education and related services must be available free of charge to every eligible child with a disability aged 3 to 21, including children with a speech or language impairment. Part B of IDEA covers ages 3 to 21, and a child who qualifies gets an Individualized Education Program (IEP). Parents can ask for an evaluation, which the public school system provides free.6,7
A lisp alone doesn't guarantee services. The impairment must adversely affect the child's educational performance, and a team that includes the parents makes that decision, not one professional. Nebraska's state guidelines are one example of how a state spells out these eligibility rules.8,11
ASHA says educational impact should be judged child by child, not from grades alone, and names articulation as an area where services are sometimes wrongly denied. In an ASHA Leader article, a school SLP describes an 8-year-old with a prominent lateral lisp who was fully intelligible; the IEP team still recommended treatment, partly to support his social-emotional well-being.9,10
United Kingdom: check whether your NHS service takes self-referrals
Many NHS children's services accept referrals directly from parents, without going through a GP. St George's in London runs an open referral system: anyone can refer a child aged 0–16 who has a Wandsworth GP, with parent or carer consent. Leeds Community Healthcare's open referral system accepts referrals from anyone, including parents and carers, and North Tees and Hartlepool accepts referrals from carers and self-referrals from young people.12,13,15
Criteria for lisps differ between trusts. Wye Valley NHS Trust's published referral criteria say therapy for lisps or a lateral /s/ is not generally undertaken until a child has good awareness and self-monitoring skills and wants to change their speech, which can be around ages 7 to 10. The same document accepts secondary-school referrals only for listed conditions, and lisps are not on that list. This is one trust's service policy (in a document dated 2017), not a national rule.14
Australia: NDIS and Medicare
For NDIS participants who are NDIA-managed or plan-managed, the NDIS Pricing Schedule 2026–27 (effective 24 September 2026) sets the maximum price for a speech pathologist's direct service at A$193.99 an hour in Modified Monash areas 1–5, A$271.59 in remote areas (MM 6) and A$290.99 in very remote areas (MM 7). The 2025–26 Pricing Arrangements and Price Limits listed the same amounts. Prices can change during the year, so check the NDIS pricing page before relying on them.17
- Medicare: ask your GP whether a GP Chronic Condition Management Plan applies, or whether a newer Medicare speech pathology pathway covers speech sound disorders. Clinic pages describe both, but the rebate figures they quote disagree and we couldn't confirm them on MBS Online, so we don't quote them here.
- NDIS: whether a lisp on its own would qualify for funding is a question to put to the NDIS and a speech pathologist.

If you pay privately: what to ask before you book
In the UK, independent speech and language therapists set their own fees. ASLTIP members are registered with the HCPC, and families can search ASLTIP's directory and deal directly with a therapist. ASLTIP says that before the first appointment you should get clear information about assessment and session costs, any travel or extra charges, and cancellation and payment terms.16
- What does the assessment cost, and is it separate from therapy sessions?
- How long is each session, and is preparation or note-writing time charged on top?
- Are there travel fees for home or school visits?
- What are the cancellation terms?
- Are online sessions available, and are they priced differently?
- After the assessment, how many sessions do you estimate, and when will progress be reviewed?
- What practice will you set for home, and how often?
Teens and adults pay for therapy too. A lisp can last into adulthood, especially for people who never had treatment or stopped as children. ASHA cites an estimate that 1% to 2% of young adults have residual or persistent speech errors. In the UK, ASLTIP's directory includes therapists who work with adults.5,2,16
What drives the total cost
Type of lisp
A frontal (interdental) or dentalized S, with the tongue between or against the front teeth, can be a normal stage for some children up to about 4½, according to speech-language pathologist Caroline Bowen. Lateral lisps, where air escapes over the sides of the tongue, and palatal lisps are not described as developmental and may be treated earlier. ASHA lists a lateral /s/ as a distortion error.5,2
Clinical researchers note that lateral lisps and residual speech sound errors should be evaluated and treated differently from other kinds of speech sound errors, which shapes how therapy is planned. None of the sources we reviewed gives session counts by lisp type, so the type changes the plan rather than a predictable price.4
Age
At least 90% of U.S. children produce /s/ and /z/ correctly by 4;0–4;11. Bowen notes that SLPs rarely treat frontal or dentalized patterns before about 4½, though they may assess a younger child to see whether it is a lisp and which type. Not every child grows out of speech errors: ASHA cites an estimate that 3.6% of 8-year-olds have a persistent speech sound disorder.1,5,2
Advice on timing varies. Bowen says lateral and palatal lisps may be treated before 4½. One NHS trust generally waits until about 7 to 10 for lisps, when a child can notice and correct their own speech. The trust's position is a service policy, not settled clinical consensus, and neither source can say what's right for an individual child.5,14
How often, and how many sessions
- We found no reliable source for a typical session frequency or total for lisp therapy. The figures that circulate online are unsourced.
- An SLP can estimate the number of sessions after an assessment and set points to review progress.
- To estimate a total: assessment fee + (session fee × the number of sessions the SLP estimates). Treat that count as an estimate for one person, not a fixed figure.
Practice at home
Services treat follow-through at home as part of therapy. North Tees and Hartlepool's NHS service accepts a referral only when a named person, such as a family member or school staff member, will carry out the therapist's recommendations. ASHA describes treatment as building a sound up from syllables and words to phrases, sentences and conversation. No source we found measures whether home practice reduces the number of paid sessions, so we don't claim a saving.15,2
A caution about low-cost tongue-exercise programs: ASHA notes that an interdental lisp can be one sign of an orofacial myofunctional disorder such as tongue thrust. ASHA also advises caution about using myofunctional therapy on its own to treat speech sound errors.3
Where home practice and SpeechStep fit
Practice between sessions supports therapy rather than replacing it. The therapist sets the target and the steps, and a parent, carer or the teen carries them out at home, moving from words toward sentences.15,2
- SpeechStep is speech-practice software for children, teens and adults, focused on lisp and the S sound. It is practice, not therapy, and it does not replace a speech-language pathologist.
- It does not diagnose. Its automatic listening for S and Z is a preliminary screen and never names a lisp type.
- Price (USD): $6.99 monthly, $49.99 annual, or $99.99 lifetime.
- It works best for the practice an SLP sets, or for practice while you wait for an assessment or an NHS appointment.
Free Lisp Test
A quick, free listening check of the S sound that helps you decide whether to book an assessment with a speech-language pathologist. It is a preliminary screen, not a diagnosis.
When to see a licensed speech-language pathologist (a speech and language therapist in the UK): book an assessment if an S sounds wet, slushy or sideways; if a frontal lisp continues past about age 4½; if a lisp comes with tongue thrust, open-mouth posture or drooling after age 4; or if a child, teen or adult is self-conscious about it. You can find support at /find-support.
A lower-cost plan, step by step
- 1Start with one assessment, not a package of sessions. An SLP can say which pattern it is and whether it's typical for the age.
- 2Try free and funded routes first: a written evaluation request to your U.S. public school, a self-referral to your local NHS service, or your NDIS plan or GP in Australia.
- 3If a U.S. school declines services, ask how social and emotional impact was considered.
- 4If you pay privately, get the full fee structure in writing and ask for an estimated number of sessions with review points.
- 5Estimate the total: assessment fee + (session fee × the number of sessions the SLP estimates).
- 6Ask about online sessions if travel or cost is a barrier.
- 7Ask the SLP exactly what to practice at home and how often.

Frequently asked questions
How much does lisp speech therapy cost?+
It depends on where you live and who pays. A lisp is treated like other speech sound errors and has no separate price. Free or funded routes include U.S. public schools under IDEA and NHS children's services, and in Australia the NDIS price limit for speech pathology is A$193.99 an hour in most areas (Modified Monash areas 1–5) under the 2026–27 Pricing Schedule, the same as in 2025–26. Private fees are set by each therapist, so get the assessment fee, the session fee and an estimated number of sessions in writing.
How many sessions does it take to fix a lisp?+
No peer-reviewed or professional-body source we reviewed gives a typical number, and the figures that circulate online are unsourced. The count depends on the type of lisp, the person's age, how often sessions happen and the practice done between them. Ask an SLP for an estimate with review points after an assessment.
Is lisp therapy covered by insurance?+
Sometimes, but it depends on the plan, and we couldn't find an insurer or regulator source general enough to quote. Ask your insurer whether the plan covers speech therapy, what it requires for approval and whether prior authorization is needed. For U.S. children aged 3 to 21, a school evaluation under IDEA doesn't depend on insurance.
Can my child get free lisp therapy at school?+
Possibly. Under IDEA, U.S. public schools provide free evaluations and services to eligible children aged 3 to 21, and lisps are named as an example of an articulation impairment. To qualify, the impairment must adversely affect educational performance. ASHA says that should be judged child by child, and an article in ASHA's magazine describes a school team also weighing social and emotional impact. Parents can ask the school for an evaluation.
Is lisp therapy free on the NHS?+
NHS children's speech and language therapy is publicly funded, and many services accept referrals straight from parents. Criteria for lisps vary, though: at least one trust generally waits until about age 7 to 10 and restricts referrals for secondary-school children. Check your local trust's referral criteria and ask what it offers for a lisp.
Does Medicare or the NDIS pay for lisp therapy in Australia?+
NDIS participants who are NDIA-managed or plan-managed can use plan funding within a price limit of A$193.99 an hour for speech pathology in most areas (Modified Monash areas 1–5), unchanged from 2025–26 in the 2026–27 Pricing Schedule. Whether a lisp on its own would qualify for the NDIS is a question for the NDIS and a speech pathologist. For Medicare, ask your GP whether a chronic condition plan or a newer speech pathology pathway applies, and check current rebates on MBS Online, because the figures on clinic sites disagree.
Should I wait to see if my child outgrows a lisp before paying for therapy?+
For a frontal or dentalized lisp in a child under about 4½, waiting can be reasonable: that pattern can be a normal stage, and at least 90% of U.S. children produce S and Z correctly by the end of their fifth year. Lateral and palatal lisps aren't described as developmental and may be treated earlier. Only an SLP can tell which pattern it is, and a single assessment costs less than a course of therapy.
Can an app replace lisp therapy?+
No. Practice software can support the practice an SLP sets between sessions, but assessing and treating a lisp is an SLP's job. SpeechStep is practice software, not therapy: it doesn't diagnose, and its automatic S and Z listening is a preliminary screen that never names a lisp type.
